When they are used in a sentence, Mayan numbers take different forms depending on
whether they are referring to objects, animals, people, etc. For example, "one butterfly" is juntuul pepem, but
"one rock" is jump'eel tunich. The forms given on this page are the "counting" form, such as a child would give if you asked him or her
to count to five.
The full Mayan number system is rarely used anymore except for historical purposes.
For numbers higher than 5, most Itza Maya people use words that have been borrowed
from Spanish (i.e. nweebej, nine, from Spanish nueve.)
