The Name Cochequa
Q: My great-grandmother was named Cochequa. She was a Chippewa Indian. Do you know
what her name meant? It was also spelled Cochiqua.

A: It's hard to be 100% sure what a Native American name was just from an English spelling of it.
However, it's likely that her name was Gchikwe (pronounced similar to kuh-chih-kway or kuh-chee-kway),
which means "Big Woman" in the Ojibwe (Chippewa) language.
Hope that helps!
