The Nanaimo Indians are a Salishan tribe of Canada, relatives of the
Stolo First Nations.
The Nanaimos speak a dialect of the Halkomelem language.
The name Nanaimo is a corruption of their name for their band in Halkomelem, Snuneymuxw, which means
"great people." (Other spellings that have been used include Snanaimo, Snanaimoq, and Snanaimuk.)
The Snuneymuxw First Nation is located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia and has a population of around 1700 people.
Few fluent speakers of Halkomelem remain, but some young Nanaimo people are working to learn their ancestral language
