Boruca Indian Language (Brunka)

Language: Boruca is a Chibchan language of Central America. The last fluent speaker of Boruca passed away in 2003, but there are still a few elders in Costa Rica who know something of the language. Like most Chibchan languages, Boruca is a tone language with SOV word order.

Names: Boruca is a Spanish corruption of their own name for themselves, Bruncajc. Their traditional name for their language was Di'tegat, "our language," or Di'tegat Brunkajc, "the language of we Borucas." Alternate spellings of these names have included Brunka, Brunca, Bronka, Boruka, Burica, Burunka, Borunca, Burunca, Borunka, Burnca, Brounka, Burucaca, and Ditegat.
