Amanaye Indian Language (Amanayé, Manaye, Manazo)

Language: Amanaye is a Tupian language of South America, still spoken by only a few elders in Brazil. Most of the Amanaye population has shifted to using Portuguese. Amanaye is an agglutinative language with fairly free word order.

Names: Amanaye is the people's own name for themselves, meaning "community" or "group of people." Since the Amanaye language is unwritten, their names have been spelled many different ways over the years, such as Manaye, Amanaié, Amanajó, Amanajo, Manajo, Amanyaye, Amanayé, Amanajé, Amanage, Amanaje, Amanyé, Manayé, Mananyé, Manajó, Manaxó, Manaze, Manazewá, and Manazo. They have sometimes also been known as the Turiwa (which was a village name) or the Ararandeua Indians (the name of a river which tuns through their territory.) The name "Ararandeua" (along with variants like Ararandeuara and Ararandewara) has been used to refer to more than one indigenous group living in this region, and it's not clear to linguists whether the languages separately recorded as "Amanaye" and "Ararandewara" are actually the same language, or two different languages from the same language family. We have included both of them together on this page since so little information is available about either.
