Cancy Apaches

"Cancy" was an alternate name for the Lipan Apache tribe. It rhymed with "Nancy" and was an English corruption of the tribal name Kantsi, which is the name for the Eastern Apaches in the language of the Caddo tribe. It was said to have been a derogatory term for the Apaches, meaning "liars" or "deceivers," though our Caddo volunteers don't recognize it as having any meaning but "Apache."
