The Mountaineers
Q: I would like your help. if
possible, to find the
Native ancestry of a friend of mine. She comes from
Nova Scotia and was
raised 'Roman Catholic' which meant that any delving
into her ancestry was
discouraged. She was only told that 'her people'
refered to themselves as
'Mountaineers'. I came across a mention of them on
television but didn't
manage to tape it. Your web site contains the most
numerous 'Tribes' so I am
hoping that you can help my friend discover
something of her Native
Heritage.
I
thank you for your time and
consideration.

A: Probably the Montagnais Innu ('Montagnais' means
'Mountaineer' in French). Try our pages
http://www.native-languages.org/montagnais.htm and
http://www.native-languages.org/innu.htm for links and
resources on the Innu people.
Hope that helps!
