Aushiri Indian Language (Aiwa, Tequiraca)
Language: Aushiri is an indigenous language of Peru. It is a tone language and is a language isolate, not known to be related
to any other language. The Aushiri language is no longer spoken natively today, though there are still elders who remember some of
the language.
Names: A second language, Waorani (spoken in Ecuador)
is sometimes also referred to as "Aushiri" or one of its many spelling variants, even though the two languages are not
related to each other. This probably originally came about through an early colonial overgeneralization lumping
different jungle tribes with similar lifestyles together. The indigenous meaning of Aushiri is no longer known. Most Aushiri
people call themselves A'iwa (which means "people") or Tequiraca. Sometimes they are also referred to by a nearby
Spanish place name, Vacacocha, or a Quechua place name, Tutapishco.
Alternate spellings of these names include Awshiri, Awishiri, Auishiri, Awishira, Awshira, Auxira, Abishira, Abijira, Avijira,
Abigira, Abichira, Abixira, Abiquira, Avishiri, Avixiri, Ahuishiri, Agouisiri, Auischiri, Ixignor, Aiwa, Aʔiwa, Ae'wa, Aewa, A'éwa,
Tekiraka, and Tekiráka,
