Popoloca is an Oto-Manguean language of Mexico.
Popoloca is sometimes confused with the similarly-named Popoluca
languages, but they have no relation to each other at all-- popoloca was simply an old Nahuatl word for a barbarian, and
was used by the Aztecs to refer to many different non-Aztec tribes.
There are seven different varieties of Popoloca, which are considered separate languages by some people and dialects of the same
language by others. Taken together there are about 20,000 speakers of Popolocan languages in
Mexico today. They are tone languages and have primarily VSO word order.
