Xakriaba Indian Language (Xakriabá)

Language: Xakriaba is a Jean language of South America, once spoken in Brazil. It is closely related to the still spoken Xavante and Xerente languages. Though there are still many Xakriaba people alive in Brazil today, they shifted to speaking Portuguese in the 1800's and few records of their original language remain.

Names: "Xakriaba" was the tribe's own name for themselves, or probably a somewhat corrupted form of their own name for themselves. "Aba" was recorded as meaning "Indians" or "people," and the meaning of the whole name was suggested by some to have been "canoe paddling people" and by others "tea making people." It has been spelled many different ways including Xacriaba, Xacriabá, Xakriabá, Xikriabá, Xikriaba, Chikriaba, Chicriaba, Chicriabá, Chakriaba, Shacriaba, Shakriabá, Shicriaba, and Shicriabá.
