Names: The tribal name Apiaka comes from an indigenous word for "person" and is spelled several different ways,
including Apiaca, Apiaká, Apiacá, and Apiake.
The Apiakas have also sometimes also been known by their names from the languages of neighboring tribes, Tapiitin (or Tapy'iting) and Paribitete,
or as the Rio Tapajós Indians, after a river that runs through their territory.
