Native Greetings of Oregon

Here are some native greetings in the tribal languages of Oregon:

Chinook Jargon: Klahowya! (pronounced "klah-how-yah")
Coos: Dai! (pronounced "die")
Coquille/Tututni: Dai! (pronounced "die")
Klamath and Modoc: Waqlis'i? (pronounced "walk-leese-ee")
Nez Perce: Hóó! (pronounced "hoh")
Paiute: Manahuu! (pronounced "mah-nah-hoo")
Siuslaw: Niishanax! (pronounced "nee-shah-nakh")
Umatilla: Niix Pačway! (pronounced "neekh potch-why")
Walla Walla: Ši'ix Pacway! (pronounced "shee-eekh pots-why")

Did you notice that some of these greetings are questions? In some Native American languages, it is traditional to greet another person by asking how they are feeling. "Hello!" and "how are you?" have the same translation in those languages.
