Native website information

This is our index of Sugpiaq/Alutiiq stories and folktales that can be read online. We have organized our Native American legends section by tribe to make them easier to locate; however, variants on the same legend are often told by Native people from different tribes, especially if those tribes are kinfolk or neighbors to each other. In particular, though these legends come from the Alutiiqs, the traditional stories of related tribes like the Aleut and Yup'ik are very similar.
Raven:
Raven is a culture hero of the Alutiiq and other Native Alaskan tribes.
He is a benevolent transformer character who helps the people and shapes their world for them,
but at the same time, he is also a trickster spirit and many Alutiiq stories about Raven have to do with
his frivolous or poorly thought out behavior getting him into trouble.
Aula'aq:
Aula'aq, or Arula'aq, is a bigfoot-like shapeshifting being of Alutiiq folklore. He lives in the wilderness
and communicates with eerie whistles.
