Names: The origin of the tribal name "Apinaye" is unknown-- "ye" is an ending meaning "people" or "community," but
"Apina" does not have any known meaning in their language or that of their neighbors. It may have been a place name or the name
of a tribal leader. The people have been calling themselves Apinaye for a long enough time that its origins have been forgotten,
but when speaking their own language they are more likely to call themselves Panhĩ, which is their word for indigenous
people in general. Alternate spellings of these tribal names include Apinayé, Apinajé, Pinajé, Apinaje, Apinage, Apinagé, Apinaie,
Apinaié, Pinaye, Pinagé, Pinaré, and Oupinagee. The Apinaye people are also sometimes known as "Western Timbira," due to their
cultural and linguistic similarity to the Timbira tribes.
They have also been known by the Timbira name Ahôtiyê (sometimes recorded as Hoti, Ahotije, Otogé, Aogé, Afotigé, etc,) which
means "corner people" and refers to a river junction.
